Laying the Foundation for Total Health
Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you attempt to put up your walls before you have a solid foundation, your walls will be weak and will eventually collapse. If you try to put on your roof before the walls are ready, you will run into the same problem. Your body is no different. When wanting to improve your health, you must go through a particular mapped-out plan of care in order to get the best results. At Korwitts Chiropractic, you will begin with a consultation and exam. In some instances, x-rays will also be taken if there is a need to look at internal structure. When you return for your second visit you will receive a report of findings and an outline of the care plan most suited to your needs. This will include a breakdown of your benefits and financials. Then in your care plan you will go through four general phases of care: Relief Care, Corrective/Restorative Care, Stabilization Care and Wellness Care or Maintenance.
Phase 1: Relief Care
If you are in pain when you come into our clinic, the first objective is to give you relief and get you feeling better as soon as possible. Phase One will generally make up approximately one third of your care plan. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical for Phase One to take 4 to 12 weeks with visits scheduled two to three times per week. Often our patients wonder why Phase 1 takes so long and involves a series of visits. The reason is simple. In the beginning, every time your doctor makes a correction to your spinal alignment, your body will be somewhat resistant to maintaining the change. Muscles and ligaments will revert to their old pattern (sometimes immediately after an adjustment)... until there's no more need to stay in protective mode. Pain is primarily meant to alert you to a major problem, a problem or injury the body feels needs to be fixed or repaired immediately. Never ignore pain, but don't think that just because it goes away, your body is back to normal, healthy function. Keep in mind that only about 20% of your nerves overall, send pain impulses. The rest deal with communication between organs, systems, hormones, etc. When you get to the end of your Relief Care you will feel a lot better, but you will still be at great risk of relapse into the original issue.
Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care
Once the pain is pretty well gone, the body's real work begins. During the Corrective/Restorative care Phase, inflammation further reduces and muscles and other tissues start healing more completely. While pain-reducing rehabilitation exercise therapy is a part of Phase One, you will now be given exercises that will create new strength and balance. You will also begin noticing positive side-effects of your care. You might be sleeping better or have better digestion. You might notice that allergies lessen as repair overall is full speed ahead. This Phase will generally make up the second third of your care plan. Your doctor will usually prescribe 2 visits a week over the course of 4 to 12 weeks. Stay regular with your appointments so you don't lose ground around the work already done.
Phase 3: Stabilization Care
Once your body has repaired areas of deficiency and has restored strong movement, Phase 3 is meant to stabilize everything that came before. This is the final third period of your intensive care plan, and with each visit you will notice an ever-increasing sense of well-being. During this time your doctor will be alert for any unexpected shifts that could be indicators of remaining weak areas. As long as you continue to invest full effort, your rehab exercises will likely take you to the best shape of your recent life. In other words, you'll be feeling great!
Phase 4: Wellness Care - Maintenance
Now that your body has healed and stabilized to it's fullest capability, it is important to come in for regular wellness adjustments to avoid problems in the future. After all, little things can happen daily that might stress or strain an area of your body. You might sleep "funny" or spend hours working in the garden with resulting aching muscles. However with a quick visit to the clinic, all systems will be go again. Usually, this only requires seeing one of our doctors one to four times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.
Your care at Korwitts Chiropractic will involve one or more of the following: chiropractic adjustments, ultrasound, electro-stim, acupuncture, rehab exercise, MLS laser, nutritional supplements. The combination prescribed to you will provide that best mix of healing modalities to give you the best possible results. "Health is a relationship between you and your body."
