The Health Effects of Stress

Stress.  The word itself is stressful.  It raises blood pressure, depletes energy in the body, can lead to depression, interferes with normal sleep patterns, disrupts activities of daily living, dysregulates hormone levels, raises inflammation and pain levels, and causes a slew of disruptions in the body’s normal functioning.  And this can all be tied back to the release of the hormone, cortisol, during stressful situations, which naturally occurs when the body is placed in a flight or fight situation when we either had to run from the bear or choose to stay and fight.

In today’s modern world, it seems that we can never fully escape from the stressors of daily living which directly affects our performance at work and interactions with family, friends and the remainder of society.  Fortunately, with practice and conscious awareness, there are ways to cope and even eliminate stress from our lives.

  1. Stress is directly created by how we react.  Evaluate the situation, find a solution and determine how your reaction can positively influence the scenario instead of ruining the day.
  2. Avoid intake of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine as these interrupt normal hormone function and ultimately the ability to cope with stressors.
  3. Get moving!  Exercise is one of the best stress relievers that increases the release of happy hormones (endorphins), while improving overall health.
  4. Get more rest.  The body heals itself, eliminates toxins and prepares the body for the next day all while you sleep.
  5. Take time to meditate, even if it is for 5 minutes!  Meditation is a great technique to relax the mind and calm any racing thoughts from the day.
  6. Learn to manage your time efficiently and don’t push yourself.
  7. Accept the fact that it’s OK to say “No”
  8. Support your body with an overall healthy lifestyle that includes proper nutrition and clean eating to keep all systems up to par when faced with challenging situations.
